Another Win for Melanie May: Travel Extra Journalist of the Year Awards 2024

Melanie May Travel Writer to Melanie May Multi-Award Winning Travel Writer

I won another award! I am officially a multi-award-winning travel writer. Writing that feels so wild! But I am trying to get better at celebrating my wins publically.

As for the award, well, I won the Best Ski & Adventure category at the Travel Extra Journalist of the Year Awards 2024 for my article “Lapland is for life, not just Christmas” in the Irish Daily Mail. You can click here to read it on the Evoke website.

I still can’t quite believe it. This year, there were 80 entrants and over 500 submissions, so to come away with a win is something I’m so proud of. It was truly a shock but a delightful one.

Melanie May Travel Writer – Multi-Award Winning Travel Writer

Back in January 2019, I won my very first award for writing – Best Newcomer at the same Travel Extra Awards. Now, six years later, I’m being recognised in a category that I love writing about: Skiing and Adventure. The journey has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows – and this award is a lovely reminder of how far I’ve come. Sometimes, I really need to stop and recognise this a lot more!

The awards ceremony was held at Thomas Prior Hall in the Clayton Hotel in Dublin, and what a night it was! Travel Extra and Limelight Communications put on a brilliant event. Eoghan Corry was a fantastic host, keeping the night running smoothly and full of energy. It was terrific to be surrounded by so many travel writers and broadcasters and catch up with many talented people I admire and look up to in the Irish travel writing scene.

Congratulations to all the other winners, especially Domhnall O’Donoghue, who won the big one – Travel Journalist of the Year.

Thanks for the Support

I want to give a big shoutout to the judges for recognising my work and to Topflight and the Schladming Tourist Board, Austria, for sponsoring the Ski & Adventure category. I can’t wait to find out where I am going on holiday. Oh, yeah, each winner wins a holiday!

I’m also so grateful to everyone who reads my articles and follows along on my travel adventures on social media.

What the Article Was About

Lapland is often considered a Christmas wonderland, but it’s so much more than that. In my article, I wrote about all the other incredible adventures you can have there at other times of the year. Staying in a snow hotel, mountain biking, Viking bathing, and chasing the Northern Lights – Lapland is magical no matter what time of year you visit.

What’s Next?

Winning this award has me fired up for the year ahead. I’ve got so many exciting projects and trips in the pipeline, and I can’t wait to share them with you.

There’s plenty to inspire your next trip. As for the article that nabbed me the Best Newcomer Travel Writer Award? It was for my piece on Toyko in the Sunday Times. You can read that here.

Here’s to more skiing and adventures in 2025. Thanks for coming along for the ride!
