Valentine’s Day in Ireland: Romantic And Fun Ideas

My Ultimate Guide to Valentine’s Day in Ireland – Whether You’re Coupled Up, Flying Solo, or Out with Friends.

Ah, Valentine’s Day. That one day of the year when restaurants push overpriced set menus, flower prices skyrocket, and your social media feed is flooded with #CoupleGoals. Cynical? Me? Nah! But can we change the narrative that Valentine’s Day is just a celebration of romantic love? Let’s change it to a day when we celebrate all the love in our lives, whether it is self-love, platonic love or just a love of doing your favourite activity or visiting your favourite place. And it goes without saying you can celebrate the things, people, and pets you love every day of the year. And you should. No need to wait until February 14th. But just in case you want to mark the date, here are some things I would suggest you do to feel the love in Ireland this Valentine’s Day.

Things to Do in Ireland on Valentine’s Day – Whether You’re Coupled Up, Flying Solo, or Out with Friends

1. Stay in a Romantic Castle

Abbeyglen Castle Hotel Review. The best castle in Ireland

For the ultimate fairytale experience, book a luxurious stay at:

Ashford Castle, Mayo – A five-star medieval castle set on a gorgeous estate with a spa, fine dining, and the oldest falconry school in Ireland. If you’re looking for grandeur, this is it.

Dromoland Castle, Clare – This historic castle mixes old-world elegance and modern luxury, complete with a golf course and award-winning restaurant.

Ballynahinch Castle, Galway – In captivating Connemara, this romantic retreat is perfect for couples who love nature, with woodland walks, open fires, and painterly views.

Abbeyglen Castle, Clifden – My personal favourite for a traditional Irish Valentine’s getaway. The warm hospitality, intimate candlelit dinners, and live music in the bar make this castle feel like home – just with an extra touch of magic! Click here to read my review.

2. Enjoy a Candlelit Concert

For a magical and intimate Valentine’s experience, why not bask in the glow of candlelight while listening to beautiful live music? Ireland has some stunning venues hosting candlelit concerts that set the perfect romantic tone.

Candlelight Valentine’s: Timeless Love Songs – St. Andrew’s Parish Church, Dublin, Feb 14 – This enchanting concert has a string quartet performing classical renditions of iconic love songs. The atmosphere in the historic St. Andrew’s Parish Church, illuminated by hundreds of flickering candles, makes for an unforgettable evening.

Valentine’s Piano by Candlelight – St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, Feb 14 – Held in one of Dublin’s most beautiful landmarks, this piano concert offers a dreamy selection of romantic melodies. With the Gothic architecture and soaring ceilings of St. Patrick’s Cathedral providing a dramatic backdrop, this is the ultimate setting for an intimate evening of music.

3. Take a Romantic Walk

Lough Ouler Wicklow Heart Shaped Lake in Ireland

Few things are more romantic than a breathtaking walk hand in hand with your loved one. Ireland has scenic routes a plenty with sweeping views, perfect for creating unforgettable Valentine’s memories. Take your pick from dramatic cliffs, coastal paths, or tranquil lakes to add a touch of magic to your day.

Cliffs of Moher, Clare – Dramatic views perfect for a sunset stroll along one of Ireland’s most famous landmarks. On a clear day, you can see the Aran Islands and beyond.

Howth Cliff Walk, Dublin – On this coastal walk, you’ll be surrounded by views of Dublin Bay, with plenty of delicious spots to stop for a coffee or seafood feast.

Dunquin Pier, Kerry – One of the most picturesque spots in Ireland with superb coastal views and an unforgettable backdrop for a romantic adventure. Just don’t drive down the pier! Google it, and you’ll see why!

Lough Ouler, Wicklow – Ireland’s very own heart-shaped lake! A hike to Lough Ouler in the Wicklow Mountains is an active way to spend Valentine’s Day. The moderately challenging trek rewards you with an aerial view of the naturally heart-shaped lake, making it a perfect spot if you are looking for a special, romantic-themed walk.

Monart Spa, Wexford – One of Ireland’s top five-star spa retreats, Monart apparently (as I haven’t been yet) has a world-class thermal suite, private treatment rooms, and relaxing natural surroundings. It’s the perfect escape for a peaceful and pampering Valentine’s getaway.

Inchydoney Island Lodge & Spa, Cork – Famous for its signature seawater treatments and pools and endless Atlantic Ocean views, this award-winning spa is ideal for a relaxing and romantic experience. The heated seawater therapy pool is a highlight. Click here to read my review.

VOYA Seaweed Baths, Sligo – Inspired by ancient Irish wellness traditions, you can enjoy VOYA organic seaweed baths and tailored spa treatments that refresh and revitalise you.

Kelly’s Resort Hotel & Spa, Rosslare – One of my absolute favourites! This beachfront retreat is renowned for its thermal suite and spa, top-class dining, and beautiful coastal setting. The thermal suite and treatment rooms are blissful.

The Spa at Johnstown Estate, Meath – Another of my favourites! If you want to feel pampered and prized this spa is the place to be. The thoroughly modern and relaxing facilities, outdoor hydrotherapy pool, and luxurious treatments make for an unforgettable spa experience.

6. Get Out on the Water

Make like Jack and Rose or Noah and Allie! If you want to feel like you’re starring in your own romantic movie, there’s nothing quite like drifting across the water, wrapped in a cosy blanket with a loved one. Whether it’s a tranquil lake, a dramatic fjord, or an Atlantic sunset cruise, Ireland has plenty of options for a dreamy boat trip.

Killarney Lakes Boat Tour – Take a journey through the stunning lakes and islands of Killarney National Park. This peaceful boat trip lets you soak up the beauty of the surrounding mountains and ancient woodlands, making it perfect for a romantic escape.

Dingle Bay Sunset Cruise – Set sail from Dingle Harbour and watch the sun dip below the Atlantic horizon while keeping an eye out for Fungi’s successors – yes, there are still dolphins spotted in the bay! The combination of golden-hour views and fresh sea air makes this a top pick for romance.

River Shannon Luxury Cruise – Rent a boat and spend a slow-paced, romantic weekend floating along Ireland’s longest river. Stop off in picturesque towns along the way, enjoying waterside pubs, historic castles, and complete tranquillity.

Connemara Fjord Cruise – Experience the raw beauty of Ireland’s only fjord with a boat trip around Killary Harbour in Connemara. This unique setting, with its towering mountains and deep blue waters, is an unforgettable way to spend Valentine’s Day.

Sunset Kayaking or Canoeing – For something more active, book a sunset kayak or canoe trip along the River Boyne or Lough Hyne in Cork. There’s nothing quite like paddling under a dusky pink sky, the gentle sound of the water making for a magical and intimate experience.

7. Visit St. Valentine’s Relics in Dublin

If you thought Paris or Rome were the most romantic places in Europe, think again! Dublin holds a secret that you may not know about! The city is home to the remains of St. Valentine himself, making it an unexpectedly fitting destination for lovebirds (or the curious solo traveller).

Whitefriar Street Church – Located on Aungier Street in the heart of Dublin, Whitefriar Street Church houses the relics of St. Valentine, gifted to Ireland by Pope Gregory XVI in 1836. Couples visit to say a prayer for their relationship, while singles might want to ask the patron saint of love to work a little matchmaking magic. The relics are enshrined beneath an altar, where people often leave love notes, flowers, and tokens of affection. If you’re in the mood for something a little eerie yet fascinating, this stop is a must on your Valentine’s itinerary.

8. Go Stargazing

It’s the perfect spot for a dreamy, otherworldly Valentine’s experience. Click here to read my guide to County Kerry.

Om Dark Sky Park & Observatory, Tyrone – If you want to take your stargazing to the next level, this observatory offers expert-led events, telescopes, and even guided night sky tours, making it a great choice for an educational yet romantic evening under the stars.
